Setting up a TOC for a course reader… Everything is basically right, EXCEPT indesign is inserting extra numbers on the third-level lines. I already have the chapter sections set up to be numbered as 1.1, 1.2, and so on (TOC3 paragraph style, which I’ve applied to the third-level lines via the TOC settings).
But, there are still extra numbers being added to the chapter section lines, as well as the chapter summary and reference lines. For reference, the first photo is regular text with my TOC paragraph styles assigned—basically how I want it to look (ignoring the unjustified page numbers). Second screenshot shows the generated TOC with extra numbers; even if I manually change a line’s paragraph style, the extra number remains. So I’m assuming the problem lies somewhere within the TOC settings; I just can’t figure out what it is. I feel like I’ve toggled every possible setting and haven’t seen a difference.
Could be coming from Automatic Numbering - does your TOC style apply the numbering?
Does the text in the body have auto numbering?
You might try Exclude Numbers in the TOC style
Hard to know without seeing your setup - if you have a sample file we can dig around that would be great.
Can you show more of the settings and your setup?
Or you can share here or send a DM with a link - whichever you prefer.

Earlier, I toggled Exclude Numbers on and off what feels like a million times and didn't see anything. Figured upon your reply, however, that I would try it one more time, and boom.
In my (very weak) defense, I did previously have two separate generated TOCs on two separate spreads, and I think I was unknowingly changing styles on the one that happened to NOT be on the page I was viewing. Big face palm. Anyways, I feel like Tobias Fünke right now, but thanks for pointing it out since I don't think I would have tried that setting again otherwise!
