Reset preferences - files appear to be gone

I had several files showing on the opening page of InDesign and I followed the instructions to reset preferences to solve the problem of a file not opening. The files on the opening page are now missing. Did I delete them with this process. None of the tutorials mentioned that risk. I am a novice in the Adobe suite, trying to help my student son.

Hi Shanda,

you did not delete any InDesign documents by trashing or resetting preferences.

You just removed the references to the documents. The documents are still there in your file system.
