Severe Lag in InDesign 19.5 When Working with Older Files or Adding Images

I updated to the most recent version of InDesign and now my files have a severe lag time. I've noticed this happens in a few different scenarios:

  • If open a file that was created in an older version of InDesign (even the previous version 19.4)
  • If I start a new file in 19.5 - the program works fine. But once I start adding images into the file, anything I try to do, move, click, right click - has a 20-30 second lag time.

Is anyone else having this issue and if so - is there a way to fix this? When I downgrade to 19.4 - all of the issues disapper, so I know this has to be an issue with 19.5.

<Title renamed by MOD>

Things I've already tried:

  • Restarting computer
  • Uninstalling/Reinstalling 19.5
  • Resetting Preferences on Quit

Try Save As with a new name.

If it doesn't help - try IDMLing - export as IDML, open, save with a new name.

Yes! this worked for me. Thanks.

It's unbelievable how bad developed Indesing is. Every update I make creates me lags and everything turn so slow. It's not possible to work this way because it costs us time and money. I'm on MacOS version.

Hi @Ashley23832418pq6a,

Thank you for sharing the operating system info. In addition to what our expert has asked. Could you please also share the below details?

  • Are the files saved on Network Drive/ System HDD/ Shared Folder on System /External HDD?
We always recommend saving the files locally. When you save and open files across a network or from removable media, many variables affect application performance. Internal hard disks have faster access/ speeds than network servers (that is, a hard disk accessed over a network) or removable media. In case you are saving the files to the network or removable media, then try saving the file to Desktop and see if that works.
  • If the problem is recent, check for any changes made to your system. For example, any antivirus, system, or application updates, or web extensions installed recently.
  • Try Booting the system in Safe Mode starts your system in a manner that it performs certain checks and prevents third party software/services from automatically loading or opening. Follow the link here to know how to boot the system into Safe Mode. If InDesign launches fine in the Safe mode, then there are some third-party services or applications like antivirus, plugins or web extensions which are conflicting with the launch of InDesign. You’ll have to disable them on your user account and then launch the app.

Let us know if that helps. We'll be happy to assist you further.

Thanks,
Harshika
