I have tried many times to change the number of 'recent files' in file handling in preferences. It is supposed to show up to 30. It only show 5. I have changed it to 30 and restarted the program many times. It still only shows 5 recent files. Is this a bug in InDesign 2025? How can I change this? Do I need to uninstall the program and reinstall?

Could you confirm which exact version of InDesign 2025 you're using, is it 20.2? Also, did this start happening only after updating to 2025, or were you seeing the same issue in earlier versions as well? If possible, could you share a screenshot of the Recent Files screen, so I can take a closer look?
In the meantime, try resetting InDesign preferences by holding Shift+Ctrl+Alt (Windows) or Shift+Cmd+Opt+Ctrl (Mac) while launching InDesign, then select "Yes" when prompted. Reference: https://adobe.ly/4kUXfxG;
Note: Make sure to back up your preferences before resetting it.
If that doesn’t work, let me know, and I’ll check further with the team. Looking forward to your update!

I suspect thenumber will continue to climb as you open more files. I don't think rthe setting is "retroactive" to show fikles that didn't show before the change.

Definitely not retroactive.
