Howdy pros and masters 🙂
How can I change one cells' width without affecting all other cells in my table?
Thanks for advance.
Hi Promaximus,
technichally spoken you cannot do that. Optically you can do that, but you will always add a new column to the table if you split one cell and merge one part of a split one with another cell like below.
Let's assume we want to make the yellow cell wider and optically we do not want to affect all other cells in the second column:
The result should be this one:
To do that we could split the cell right to the yellow one in two using the Split Cell Vertically command on this sel

Be aware that in the moment you are doing this, you are adding another column to your table!
Now let's merge the two yellow cells to one, but also note that still there is a fourth column in the table:
You can see that there is a fourth column in the table if you select the table and check the Control panel for example. Or you could select one column after another.
First column with 4 cells selected:
Second column with 4 cells selected:
Third column with 3 cells selected:
Fourth column with 1 cell selected:
Now decide yourself if it's worth the effort to split and merge cells.
Note: You will not be able to copy the contents of the selected 3rd column to the clipboard.
As I tried to copy the selected cell in column four and the last cell of column three together to the clipboard, InDesign 2022 crashed:
