The previous person working on the document used Cross References.IndesignPlugin. Unfortunately, when I try to remove link traces (":") from the text, Indesign crashes. Does anyone have an idea how to work around this (change / replace does not work, delete, cut, convert to curves, even selecting ":" will crash)

Truly finding the root of that problem would probably require more information about versions involved, etc., but one thing you can try is saving a copy of the document as IDML. When you re-open the IDML, the file effectively rebuilds iteslf and should discard any "baggage" that manifests as corruption.
