Text box sizing

I have somehow changed my text boxes.  First, there is no resizing icons on them.  But most annoying is when i do try and size them they act like polygons.  Could someone tell me what i have done.  Thank you.

It sounds like you are using the Direct Select tool rather than the regular select tool. In Newer versions of InDesign the regular selection tool is the outline, or open, arrow (keyboard shortcut V with no active text cursor) and the direct select tool is the Solid arrow (shortcut A).
