Why is the text shifting down slightly when I open a doc & go to edit the text, this is incredibly frustrating & time-consuming. I have restarted the program yet it is still happening??

Does the text shift inside the frame—or the text frame itself?

If the latter, then you may experience this issue:

In which case, check if you're using Magnet or corporate security software, which can cause this problem.

text shifting down slightly

Hi @fh-incentives , Do you mean shifting down relative to the text frame? Check the Text Frame Options First Baseline Offset setting—it determines where the text starts relative to the frame:

Ae you using the exact same fonts from the exact same source? Different versions have internally-defined ascents that can differ from version to version (tends to happen with open source fonts that are constantly being updated... e.g. newer versions tend to set the internal ascent bigger than previous versions to accommodate more additional multi-language accents/glyphs). This causes issues with InDesign's text boxes when the setting for First Baseline offset is set to Ascent.

Hello everyone, exactly the same problem here. Seems as this problem occurs mainly, if an indesign document is edited, which was initially generated with an older indesign version.

Perfectly normal occurrence. If you're going to edit a document created in an older version it's probably best to use the recompose all text command. command-option-/ [Mac] ctrl-alt-/ [Windows]

Thanks for your answer, but it did not work here. As soon, as i change something in my text (e.g. adding some blanks or characters), the text in my table cell or in my text box is shifting 1 mm vertically downwards. see image.

... i also tried to install different versions of Adobe Source Sans Pro (Adobe Cloud Font/older Google Fonts), same issue with either font version.

It's not the version of the InDesign file that's the issue, it's the version of the FONT itself. Unfortunately, open source fonts like this one are constantly changing. Here's the difference in the ascent between Source Sans version 2 and Version 3 (which is the version Adobe Fonts and Google currently serve out).

So if your existing document was composed using an older version 2 with the shorter ascent, even if you open it now, it will stay composed like it was UNTIL you make any changes whatsoever, in which case, InDesign recomposes according to your currnetly installed font. In your table, making a change in a particular cell recomposes just that cell. As @BobLevine suggests, force a recompose of the entire document using the commands he stated.
