The issue with continuous footnote numbering.

When creating a book in InDesign, I encountered an issue with footnote numbering in the text. I need the numbering to be continuous throughout the entire document, but it starts over on each page. For example, on page 15, the first footnote is numbered 1, and on page 25, the second footnote should be numbered 2. However, when I add a footnote, it automatically numbers it as 1, even though restarting is disabled. What could be the problem?

InDesign's footnote numbering always restarts in a new story. So in each document (after the first one) you need to set the start number.

I understand that if your text blocks are not connected, footnotes will start from 1 again. However, when you select "start at" and choose the number 2, for example, your first footnote is also numbered as 2, and all footnotes on all pages are numbered as 2.

Footnote start numbers can be set only once in a document. That's why you have to thread frames or set start numbers in documents.

You have to link all text frames to a single story. All text frames are now single independent text frames. This is causing your problem.

In view of Willi's comment, the complete answer is:

1. In a book (using an InDesign book file) you'll have to set the start number in each document after the first one.

2. In a single-document book you'll have to thread all stories.
