The Trouble With Page Numbers

Community Beginner ,
Jul 03, 2025 Jul 03, 2025

Numbering was no problem for my 350-page book but then I tried adding Roman Numerals to the opening pages. What I ended up with are no RNs appearing on the opening pages but they do appear as numbers in Pages. But none of the RNs appear on the actual pages, only in Pages. Here's a screenshot

Now that the sequencing is all out of whack, can't return to reassign Page 1 to what has become Page XV.

How can I manage this mess?

Odd pages should be to the right of the fold:

On the Parent Pages, did you build this?

Type menu > Insert Special Character > Markers > Current Page Number

... a special character in a text frame?

Can you please elaborate on what you mean by "pages" vs. "Pages"? You evidently refer to different entities when using these terms.

"Pages" = the Pages array in, what I'll call, the Properties menu to the right. (Screenshot)

"pages" = pages in the manuscript (Screenshot)

Also, neglected to mention that I thought I'd set up a separate Parent for the Roman Numerals but there is no such parent in Pages; just the Roman Numerals on the Pages column, not on the actual pages.

Hi @Dennis Whitehead , Can you show your Numbering & Section Options with your page 2 selected? Does it look like this?:

With this scenario, I started with the body of the book when I numbered pages and then added the front matter. With that, I then wanted to designate the pre-story pages with Roman Numerals.

When doing the latter, I thought I was setting up a Parent to apply to these specific pages, but no Parent, only a RN number beneath the pages in Pages.

Then realized I;’d made a mistake not numbering an added section heading, that would be the unseen Page 1, but…

Many thanks

Dennis

That's great! Highlight the page, Type - Insert Special Character, Markers, Current Page, and the number, viii, is randomly inserted into the text. Screwed this up royally!
