Hello everyone,

I have been facing an issue while trying to underline the numbering in a list. I am able to underline the text, but not the numbering. The character style is also not helping me in this case. Can anyone please suggest a solution to this problem?

Thank you in advance for your help!

This feature has been requested many times before (also Strikethrough doesn't work). There is already a request on the InDesign User Voice website. Please vote for it here:

Looks as if you can't. It works with colour, font style, all kinds of things, but not with underline (or strikethrough). You could log a feature request.

Yes, there have  been a couple of discussions of this in recent months. That lines can't be applied, and a leading tab can't be included (for number positioning) are both fairly inexplicable gaps in the formatting capabilities.

I'm meh on using underline, but have nothing against it... but more than once, using strikethrough to indicate a finished or discarded step in a list has seemed like a useful option.

Simplistically, use a "Para Rule Above" ("Before" = by default para rule para style settings! / "After" = adjustments).

Before …Before …

After …After …

I read it as — this is dependent on the following style, which is awkward construction; also, how do you apply it to the last item in a list?

Clever workaround, but a bit hacky-fragile.

Paragraph rules are always a single line of whatever weight you define, and with whatever offsets you define, so the number of lines in the paragraph is irrelevant, and you can adjust the right indent to match the number of digits. Lots of work, but effective.
