unable to update links automatically

New Here ,
Sep 19, 2022 Sep 19, 2022

Hi

I have recently moved all Adobe InDesign image library from one server to another. InDesign is running in Mac environment.

However, after migrating to new server when I try to open an InDesign file in mac it is asking me to update links for each file. I have multiple InDesign files that needs to be updated. It will take me few days just to update these links. Is it possible to update all these links automatically?

It works fine when I am connected to the old server. However, when I connect to new server it asks me to update each link. Can you please assist?

Thank you

Are the links in the same directory folder or in various locations on the new server?

Hi Kevin

The links are in same folder. I have not made any changes while migrating. It is exactly same.

Here is the thing:

We have a server named nmi-data01 that user's connect to. This nmi-data01 points to a file server NMIFSH01 at the moment(which is old server). NMIFSH01 has two folders Current and Image. Current has all the Indesign brochure files whereas Image has all image library files that indesign files link to.

I have already migrated Image and Current folder (these are shared folder) from NMIFSH01 to new server NMI-FS02.

Users won't see any changes as they are connecting to NMI-data01 which points to NMIFSH01. I have changed the DNS to NMI-FS02 now. So, when users connect to NMI-data01 they are connected to NMI-FS02.

After migration, the links are not updating automatically.

I appreciate for your suggestion.

Thank you

Bhuwan

Having the original server disconnected first is key.

Then two options:

1. Put the InDesign file in the same folder as the images. The open the ID doc.

InDesign should auto find all the same named resources in the folder with the ID document.

2. Open the InDesign doc and go to your Links panel. All links should show the red stop sign icon (missing link).

Go your your links panel menu and choose Relink. Find the first asset missing and it should auto find the remaining as long as they are still in the same folder together.

To be clear, links will never auto update with a server change like this. You will still need to point InDesign to the new assets as changing the server location (from NMI-FS01 to FS02) requires a remap of the asset location.

Do you have enabled "Find missing Links Before Opening Document" in Indesign preferences? It works for me after I move same folder structure to local Volume and back to server.
