I thought I'd solved this problem, but now it's taken a new form. When I apply a new paragraph style to text in a column that is already correctly formatted, a character style is also applied (i.e. the running text is "Basic Paragraph" or "General Text," the special text is poetry). The program is "defaulting" to this undesired style. If I select the text and apply the "none" character style BEFORE the paragraph style it's fine, but I'd rather not have to take this extra step.
The style that is applied is a special initial cap character used as the first letter of articles in a magazine. It is applied to all characters in the affected text. It is not part of the paragraph style.
I am using MAC Ventura, CC 2024.

Can you be more specific? What is the exact style you are applying that is causing problems? Can you show a screen capute of text before applkying the style and after, with highlighting (if necessary) to show what you are not happy with?

Various paragraph styles, .The character style is self-imposed. I don't ask for it to happen, do not select the paragraph style. The column is set to "NONE.". It seems to happen with more than one character style, none of which are chosen, none of which are part of the paragraph styles. It doesn't do it all the time., so I have been unsuccessful in recreating it.

A character style always overrides the paragraph style. If you do not want its formatting, you have to remove this character style.
If you want to have the first letter with a specific character style on a regular basis, do not apply it manually, use nested, drop character or GREP style inside a paragraph style.
Do not use the given default Basic paragraph style as it can cause many problems.

What I want to know is WHY the character style occurs at all as I have not selected it or applied it, and how to avoid its appearing when I have not selected it or applied it. The program seems to choose more than one style to apply.
I'll stop using the basic paragraph style; it does seem to be more trouble than it's worth.
