As the screenshot shows, there is too much space between my text and the footnote marker ("71" in this case). It is NOT an actual spacebar space, but an automatic spacing being generated for every note. When the tracking is wider, it appears like a typo (an unnecessary space). How can I eliminate that space?
A space character in the prefix field might be not visible. Make sure that this field is empty. Go with the tabulator to this field, select all, click delete.

It is justified with last line aligned left. What paragraph formatting settings do you need?

From the Paragraph panel menu choose Justification, or the Justification pane in your Paragraph Style definition dialog.
I suspect that you have an allowable setting for increased character spacing and because you are using justified text that is kicking in.

Thank you, do these settings help you identify anything causing this unwanted spacing?

Does the footnote definition have a space or other character in front of the number? Look in the Prefix field of the Footnote Options. (Type | Doc Footnote Options).

It doesn't appear to be the justification settings or a prefix for the reference.
This is happening with all footnotes?
Does it happen if you make a new doc, add some filler text and insert a footnote reference?
