I'm a photographer and primarily use Photoshop and Lightroom. I've used InDesign since its first release (and Pagemaker before then) so I'm not a total newbie. I primarily use InDesign to custom-print promos from my Canon PRO-1000 printer. It's been a good 9-10 months since I printed anything.
The past couple of days I've been working on some new promo pieces with InDesign 2024. I updated my Windows 11 probably about two or three months ago to the most recent build. I was surprised when I went to print the promo piece. Instead of bringing up the usual interface, there's a brand new one. Though I had chosen my Canon printer in InDesign, the Windows print interface still showed my default printer, my Ricoh laser. Through that interface, I had to reach the Canon printer driver. I adjusted my settings as needed and printed.
I didn't like the results, so I hit CTRL-P again, and the Windows print had reverted back to the laser printer. As a result, I had to reselect the Canon in the interface and reset all the settings I had changed previously. Over the years, this had never happened before where, every time I wanted print, I had to change the settings. (Hopefully, all this is clear.) Also, just now, when I reopened the saved file (which had been printed with the Canon and in the past if saved, it always saved the printer with the file, the printer reverted to the default.
Any thought on what might be going on? I never had this issue with earlier versions of InDesign and Windows.
Thanks

I wonder if this has anything to do with the issue you describe:

Thanks! This is precisely what happens to me -- the extra Windows print dialog rather than going to the printer-specific dialog. Strange, though, I didn't experience this until I updated Indesign to 2024 from 2022. I still have 2022 on my computer (because of similar but different weird issues with Photoshop, I keep at least one older version on my computer). I just tried printing from InDesign 2022 (v.17 I think), and I now get the extra the Windows dialog before being able to enter the printer-specific/driver dialog.
I think it's related to Microsoft changing the architecture of printing in Window 11 and Adobe not working with that. Annoying as hell.

Hi @NemoNiemann,
Thanks so much for sharing the details. Please try the steps suggested in the community thread shared by the expert and let us know how it goes. If the issue still persists, you might also want to check this related discussion: How to remove the Win32 Print Screen dialog after the new Windows 11 update.
Looking forward to hearing back from you!

Thank you for the suggestion. Based on the example, that is precisely what is happening in my case -- an added dialog to deal with. However, the suggestion idea of going back to the older legacy Print Dialog doesn't seem like it will work. Based on the what I read in the third-party solution, it looks like it simply replaces the "prettified" print dialog box with the older without removing that extra print dialog from my workflow. What I am seeing now is that I must change my default printer (system wide) in order to have the proper printer come up and not constantly change the printer settings for the document in InDesign. Previously, if I chose a specific printer (my Canon PRO-1000 for instance) to print on Photo Matte paper, with no color management, increase brightness +5, all within the print driver for that specific document, the next time I opened the document in InDesign, the document print preferences were saved when I saved the file originally upon exiting. (Wow, long run-on sentence, sorry.) Now, each time I want to print within the same work session, I have to reset everything to what I wanted.

I'll make a quick suggestion. Export a PDF and use the booklet feature in Acrobat.
Also, turn off "Allow Windows to Manage my default printer" in your Windows settings.

I have done that in the past and that may be the only real workable suggestion. Thanks.

Hi @NemoNiemann , If you need the Print Booklet added features another option is using the Adobe PDF 9.0 PPD and outputting a Postscript/PDF
If you can’t find an Adobe PDF 9.0 link you can download it here:
