So i started working on a history book in malayalam language. It consists of 3 volumes, the first book has 10 chapters and i've splitted into 10 files and used the book feature in indesign. Each chapter is about is about 40-50 pages with 2 column, justified text, and text wrap.
My problem is it lags so much even in fast preview. It is frustrating to work and takes up alot of time. And i've attached my justification settings as well for reference. However, i've been finicking with justification setttings, if i don't use glyph scaling at all, it speeds up by alot.
My question, how will i use this feature without affecting my performance, the glyph scaling plays a good chunk of my workflow. And i can't just turn it off and on everytime.

16 GB Ram
By @EddyWills
I'm not sure if that's the reason for your particular issue, but 16 GB can be insufficient for efficient InDesign operation. If you can upgrade your laptop's memory then I'd recommend at least 32 GB. Again, I don't know if it will make a difference for the issue you describe.

Yeah, 16GB is good for a "light" work.

Based on the original description of 40-50 pages, 16 GB should work. However, if the OP is opening up an entire book at once (approximatly 500 pages) or a large number of chapters, it could bog down.
Since the OP said it bogs down even with fast preview on, my guess it is probably either too many files open at once (and low RAM) or a font issue.

I opened the same file on a different PC. with i5 14600K, 32GB DDR5 system. It is "faster" compared to the laptop. However, it is not enough to work smoothly plus it was just text for 40-50 pages spread in a two column. And it still lagged while scrolling and zooming in. It takes 2 second to activate type tool in text box.

Except you are dropping down from an i7 to an i5, so it's hard to make a direct comparision of speed.

How many chapters are you opening at once? Make sure you are not in Overprint Preview.
What is your actual MSI model?

I'm using MSI GF65 9SEXR. And no i only have one file opened per sessions. Like i said it run "smoothly" if i don't use glyph scaling in justification settings.

What are you scaling settings? I tried it on a 90-page chapter and it didn't slow it down (after a minute to run through the document and adjust everything).
Try this:
Take a problem chapter, change the font to something else but keep the same glyph scaling. Does it bog down too? (Don't save the changes after the test.)

That's what I've already suggested - maybe it's just a faulty font?

@Robert at ID-Tasker Yes, I saw your post. I just wanted to repeat it to make sure the OP saw it "seconded".

BTW, I believe that system can hold up to 64 GBs of RAM. Crucial.com has 64 GB at $117 US, and 32 GB at $59.
I would probably go with 32 GB due to the processor age.

Ok guys, the text is from pagemaker which was typesetted in ML font (which is ASCII font for malayalam that was created a long ago). I had to convert using typeit a software to convert malayalam fonts to different versions. So i converted the type from ML -> MLU.
Problem with ML is that i can't directly type in indesign if i have corrections to make. So that's where the conversion needs to take place.
However, i exported the text RTF from pagemaker and imported to indesign and used FML fonts (ML fonts are not supported in indesign). And voila it works perfectly fine.
So question, should i stop using MLU for large body text and switch to FML or am i missing something?

So conversion to FML let's you make corrections to the text - but lags when glyph scaling?
Copy link to clipboard

No, so MLU is what i'm currently using, which is unicode typeset. While using this, glyph scaling causes issues. However in FML i don't have that problem as it is in ASCII typeset, but doesn't allow me to edit the text directly.

Can't you fix your text first?

And why do you need glyph scaling?
Are you applying it as a local override - or as a CharStyle?
And there is nothing attached to your post.
