I’m using Master Pages in InDesign to maintain consistency across my document, but I’m running into an issue where elements on the master page aren’t editable on specific pages. Is there a way to override these elements on individual pages without losing the master layout?

There are a couple of exceptions to the Cmd/Cntl-Shift-click override:

  • If the objects are on a locked layer. Generally, I like to put items to override on a separate layer from those I do not want to override. Then I lock the latter layer.
  • If the object override was disabled (see graphic).

You can Cmd/Ctrl  +  Shift click to release an element from the Master/Parent page onto the document page for editing.

Depends on what / how you want to edit - you can create a new Master - based on another Master - and apply this one instead.

You also need to be careful what you are changing after you make an override.

You might change colors on the page - and still be able to change the position on the Master.

Or change location - and then still control colors through the object on the Master.
