Workspace resets to default (essentials) on everytime a new document is loaded

Macbook Pro M1 16, 2021. Running Ventura 13.6.

Adobe InDesign 2024 19.0

My custom workspaces are never loaded when opening/creating new documents, instead InDesign defaults to the Essentials workspace, and I have to manually change the workspace back to my custom preset.
This happens everytime a new document is opened or created, instead I would expect the selected workspace to save and stay the current workspace until I change it.

Your system setup is almost the same as mine. I would suggest you try restoring your InDesign preferences and caches. Your issue can come up when you've installed a major new InDesign version. Here is a good piece on how to do that:

Hi Steve, thanks. I've tried manually clearing both cache and preference folders as well as removing and reinstalling InDesign but no luck. This was happening with the previous version too, and after the latest update I figured I'd try and submit the bug report. There is a workaround where you rename your custom workspace with the Essential workspace pathname so InDesign auto-defaults to the custom (thinking its the Id Essentials), but I was hoping for a better solve.

Hi @weston09:

Have you saved a custom workspace?

  • Set it up the way you like and then choose Window > Workspace > NewSave Workspace
  • Then exit and return. The custom workspace should still be loaded.

I'm on Ventura 13.6, InDesign 19, Apple M1 Max MacBook Pro and it is working as expected.

Yes, I have multiple custom saved workspaces. They still appear at the top of the list in the workspaces menu, but upon opening any document (new or saved), the workspace resets/loads back to the default essentials workspace.

However, I'm not seeing a "Save Workspace" option in my workspace menu. I can still make new workspaces though, I have options to make a new workspace, and then confirm the workspace name, panel locations and menu customization options. See attached screenshot. Still having the same issue as mentioned before.

Hi Weston:

That was my mistake. The CC apps use the terminology "new workspace", but I'm also an Adobe FrameMaker user and it uses the words "save workspace". I get them mixed up.

This certainly sounds like a recognized bug and so likely I can't offer any additional assistance, but, just double check
/Users/[username]/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/[Version Number]/[Language]/Workspaces

Are your saved workspaces listed in that folder?

No worries, I appreciate the help. Yes, all of my custom workspaces are in that folder.
I found a slight workaround by renaming copies of my custom workspace to "Essentials_CurrentWorkspace.xml" and "Start_CurrentWorkspace.xml" to replace the Adobe defaults in that folder until I figure out something else.

This bug has been happening for many versions. I don't know if it's related to running Extensis Suitcase (Connect Fonts). The workaround you're listing above is what I've posted in other threads. I've also created a hot key to load my specific workspace.

Thanks for posting on earlier threads, your workaround is saving me some headache. I don't have Extensis, but I do have another app running font management stuff (Monotype). Still not sure what could be causing the issue.
