Hi people,
'About InDesign' attached.
Simply trying to save out a file as a PDF - smallest file size. Get the same error every time (see attached), I've tried saving the file as a package (IDML) to desktop and saving out as all different PDF kinds. No luck.
I really don't want to have to rebuild this file as it won't be very enjoyable.
Somebody please help, thanks!
Hi George,
because the error message is a bit generic and will not tell much, I'd try the following:
Make sure to export without a background process.
You'll need admin rights to do the following:
Quit InDesign.
Perhaps even restart your machine.
Enable the option that you can see file suffixes on all files in your Finder ( Mac ) or File Explorer ( Windows ) .
[1.] Create a blank text file named exactly:
DisableAsyncExports.txt
[2.1.]
When on MAC OS X, open your InDesign app in the appli

Please tell us what operating system (exactly) you're running.
Can you post the file for others to test?

Try exporting half the page range - like if it's a 20 page book then try page 1-10 and then try 11-20.
See if it crashes.
Where it crashes - you will see that page range.
Half the page range again, if it crashes on 1-10 then try 1-5 etc.
Once you've "divided and conquered" you can find the troublesome page and figure out what on that page(s) are causing it to crash.
Let me know if you need more help with this.

When on MAC OS X, open your InDesign app in the applications folder with a right click with "Show Package" and go to: Contents/MacOS/
Copy DisableAsyncExports.txt to that folder.
2.2
When on Windows copy DisableAsyncExports.txt to the folder where your InDesign.exe file resides.
E.g: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign 2021\
If you want to revert to background processing simply remove the text file.
Example PDF export progress bar with my InDesign CC 2018.1 on Windows 10:
The progress bar will show some more what the export process is doing.
And also where it stops if it stops, e.g. the page name or a specific placed image file name.
