After closing document, gray screen with control panel blocks my desktop

Hello all,

When I close an InDesign document, the controls are visible, but my Mac Desktop is covered with a grayish screen. In short, when I close a document I want to see my Desktop! Any clues would be appreciated. See pic below.

Hello,

Use the red dot to close the application window and the InDesign document not the X for the document.
