Alternate page/section sequences?

Is there a way to create alternate page or section sequences in indesign, with pages/sections in the altenate iteration being linked to a master sequence?

I have a portfolio indesign document that I maintain as a master, and then derive reduced versions of this document for almost every single job application. I do this by creating a copy of the master file, and then deleting each section or pages I do not wnat to include in a portfolio for a given job application.

The problem with that approach is that it's very time-consuming to have to take out dozens of sections, and specific pages for every job application.

One method I contemplated was to do this via the export function, with specifying pages numbers and sections in the export dialog. But that would end up taking more time to do this than my current method.

Any idea or suggestions?

Closest I can think of is the "place and link" command, explanations here: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/user-guide.html/indesign/using/linked-content.ug.html

With it, you can copy a text frame and place elsewhere in the document, and when the original is modified the copy will be too.

Not sure it will really help you in the long run, but worth knowing about.

TAW, your suggestion actually led me to find an interesting solution.

Method 10: Place INDD of this page explains how to achieve what I'm trying to do. The only problem is that there is a lot of work with placing each page of the source onto pages of the destination file as I have to do that for 50 pages. But this is definitely a working solution.

It almost works. Had this linking function included the location and dimensions of a given item, it'd have done the job. Or had it offered the possibility to link entire pages, it'd have also worked.

Thank you for your suggestion TAW.

For placing InDesign pages, PDFs or AI files with multiple artboards see into the Multi Page Importer script, originally written by Scott Zanelli, now curated by Mike Edel:
