Auto-number sequence question

I am working on a series of 800-page books. I am have done all of the layout in InDesign. On each page there are only 2 elements: 1. an image box with an image placed in it, and 2. a text box with a caption. The caption is a series number. The series runs from X.0001 to X.5000. Instead of manually typing in X.0001 on a page, then going to the next page and manually typing in X.0002 and so on, is there a way to auto-generate the captions on each page? This the general situation. However for some of the series numbers there is a sequence such as X.0100, X.0101-A, X.101-B, and X.0102 where there is an “A” or “B” that breaks the continuity. Is InDesign able to let me add to a auto-generated number sequence, i.e. auto-generated page number then pick up after I modified something in the sequence? My apologies if I did not explain this clearly. Thank you for any thoughts for my question.

Control the text with a paragraph style. Within the paragraph style, use Numbering options. If necessary, make a second paragraph style that has a numbering list in it that uses a different defined list name. Read about numbered paragraph styles here:

It gets interesting about half way down the page at Define Lists.
