Yes. All of the book files have to be open at the time you are generating the document, and the Book checkbox checked in the Index panel.

I would keep the Book box unchecked until you are ready to generate the Index, as it tends to slow the program down, especially if you have a large number of index entries.

sounds good. I've created about 14 files/chapters. the editor has given me about 100 words and phrases to be included in the index. Are you saying I should the book dialog filter and all chapters, different files, at same time? And then run the indexing program?

It is the Generate Index dialog, not in your list of chapters.

I understand that to generate the words I will import into a new text box on my Index page. But how do I get words, I have 100 words, into the index program? I have 14 separate files/chapters.

Hi Ken:

In InDesign, one first has to index all of the words and phrases. Once that is done, then you can generate the alphabetical list.

It's basically a 3-step process:

  1. Add index markers.
  2. Generate the index.
  3. Flow the index story.

Franz gave you a good resources to get you up and running. Be sure to read the section under "Index every occurrence of a word automatically".

Here is another good resource: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMnEdgHTgag.\
