Being a noob in InDesign, I am designing a textbook.

Things seem to go quite well, untill i try and add caption numbering.

i have added pictures using the Place-option. Then added a static caption.

For this caption I create a separate paragraph-style: caption. In this paragraphstyle I defined that I wanted the figures numbered.

Figure ^#

Continue from previous numbering.

But all my captions read: Figure 1

Can anyone tell me what I am missing here?

I read many tutorials and watched many videos, but i cannot find the misktake I am making.

Thank you in adavnce for your interest in my little problem.

Just to make it absolutely clear what jmlevy said:

You need a custom numbering list defined to enable the feature that numbering of paragraphs will work accross several stories.

Without a numbering list InDesgn s not able to do numbering of paragraphs throughout several stories.

Note: A single story is an entity of consecutive texts in one single text frame that is not threaded to other text frames.

Or it is an entity of consecutive texts that is flowing through a number of text frames that are threaded.

So numbering will work within a single story without using a numbered list.

But it will not work accross several stories. For that you need a numbered list defined.

Regards,
Uwe
