Chapter headings won’t change

Stupid question number two of the day. I'm trying to add chapter headings in a master. Every time I use that master, the chapter number just shows '1' rather than updating (I've made sure it's set to auto change the numbering). What am I missing? Thanks...

Place the insertion point where you want the chapter number to appear, and then choose Type > Text Variables > Insert Text Variable > Chapter Number.

Thanks Derek, that's what I've done. But the number is 1 each time I use the master where I've done that. Surely each new use of the master should be one number higher than the previous? What am I missing? Thanks!
