I am a HUGE fan of Illustrator so I prefer to work in there if I can.
I had to bring in a cutpath, also known as a dieline, or also known as a simple path or stroke from illustrator into indesign. For whatever reason I could NOT for the life of me, get the stroke to transfer over. I tried to Copy & Paste, I tried to use CC Libraries. Nothing was working. It would just paste the cutpath as an image instead of the actual vector, editable path.
I FOUND THE PROBLEM.
GO INTO YOUR INDESIGN PREFERENCES-
Choose Clipboard Handling-
Clipboard:
MAKE SURE THIS IS UNCHECKED: Prefer PDF When Pasting
If this doens't solve your problem, I am so sorry!
I did read that there is another way that may help.
By selecting your obejct in InDesign and choosing
Object > Clipping Path > Convert Clipping Path to Frame
how come you can't just place the .ai file for the dieline in indesign?
yes, copying and pasting from other programs to indesing causes issues. It should not be done. It causes print and display issues to do embedding of graphic.

That's a great question! I am not sure why I didn't think to try placing this. My brain must've been everywhere else.
