Hello,

In indesign, when you place text from an external file, you are given an "place" icon which lets you place text in columns and this draws a text box fitting perfectly the column it is placed into.

However, when copying text from the same indesign document, I can't place text in empty column like I'm used to doing with an external file. No "place" icon is showing up. There is no way place it automatically in an empty column.

Am i missing something or a feature is missing?

Thank you for your help / ideas

That is correct. I normally just click to add a new frame, and then adjust the frame to match the layout.

However, if you are trying to thread the copied text into existing frames, click an insertion point (the blinking vertical bar) in the story and then paste. If it doesn't fit into the frame, return to the Selection tool, click the out port to reload the cursor and then you can place the next column as you are used to.

Thank you Barb for your message,

I already know all this but it will be useful for people looking for this.

I just thought the place icon was very convenient and saved a few extra clicks when placing text and that it seems like a missing feature for the clipboard!
