Copying Excel Rows into One InDesign Cell

Hi All,

I am needing to copy values in three vertically adjacent rows in excel and paste them into a single cell in a table in InDesign. The table in InDesign is already made and instead of having three cells with three values, it has all values in a single cell, stacked using the immediate returns so that the cell heights can be reduced. The tables are very involved and cannot be edited without spending an extraordinary amount of time on them (in either excel or InDesign). Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Hi

Can you confirm the version of the software and operating system you are using?

I think you are describing what's called a nested table, a small table inside the cell of a table.

Have you tried to insert the data in a small table somewhere in your document, then cut and paste that small text frame inside the cell of your bigger table?

So how about:

  1. Select the three vertically-adjacent cells in Excel
  2. Edit > Copy
  3. Click in the single cell in InDesign
  4. Edit > Paste in Place

Hi,

with my InDesign 2020 and old Excel 2010 on Windows 10 it works like that:

1. Select three vertical cells in Excel.

2. Copy the selected cells to the clipboard.

Switch to InDesign.

3. Select the first text insertion point of a table cell.

Or: Select all the text of a text cell if you want to exchange the contents.

Important: Do NOT select the cell itself! Just the contents, the text.

3. Paste from the clipboard.

4. Remove the last paragraph special character in the cell.
