Corrupted files or something else?

 These boxes are randomly showing up in many of my documents (which I rename and reuse). I can make them go away by toggling "W" on and off, and/or closing InDesign and reopenning. Is this maybe a document bug and I should recreate new templates, or something else? Thanks.

Thanks, Bob. That did the trick. I'm working on a very old machine, hoping to upgrade soon to something that will be more compatible with all the Adobe upgrades.
