I am relatively new to Indesign and I don't know whether the below feature exists or is even possible with Indesign

I am looking to build a parts catalogue about 1500 parts. Each spread has a table of the product images on left page and table with the product number and description on the right page. Some products appear in more than one category.

Is it possible at all to get / create a script that when a product number is entered in the table the product image can be automousely linked to the product image page?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Adam,

this should be possible with InDesign Data-Merge feature-set. Take a look at the turorials.

What it does: it takes a .csv (.txt, e.g. excel-exports), and lets you use theses values in your document. Now let InD create these pages for you, you do not need a script based on your desription.
