Creating odd-shaped link boxes

We build e-book travel guides in InDesign, primarily in pdf format, sometimes epub.

Each guide has a main map menu, linking to section map menus which link to areas of coverage. The section maps and areas of coverage are rarely square or rectangular, so it is impossible to use one link box. Typically we have used a number of link boxes to fill the area of the link.

Sadly, the result in iOS devices is a link where only one part of the link is highlighted when selected. It doesn't look the best.

Are we missing something? Is it possible to create an odd-shaped link box which will highlight the entire link area in iOS devices?
