Customizing Auto Generated Captions in InDesign

I am auto-generating captions for imaegs as I place them. The easiest way to do this, in my mind, is to use the file name since my captions are short. I don't seem to be able to strip the extension out of the file name however. Can this be done or will I be adding metadata to all of my images? (May not matter but I'm runnimg Windows, InD CS 16.3 v 64)

Thx!

I love this, it's so wonderfully nerdy, thanks for the suggestion.
