Did master page overrides change?

Hi gang,

It used to work this way:

Make a frame on the master page. Go to the local page and place a graphic into that same frame (creating an override). Later, decide you want the graphic to sit in a different place, so ... go to the master and move the placeholder original frame. That should trickle down and move the graphic on the local page ... right?

It used to...

What am I missing?

It works the same for me as for jmlevy. Also InDesign 16.0.1 and macOS 10.15.7.

Hmmm. <head scratch> Maybe it's time.

I was demonstrating this to a group of students, and I was in v16 and they were in v15. None of us could get it to happen. Hence, my question today!

Hey Mike:

As long as you don't do anything on the body page besides place the graphics into the placeholder frames, the yes, moving the placeholder frames on the master should move the body page frames. If a student were to nudge a frame on the body page, or slightly resize it, that would break it, but otherwise, you described what should be happening.

Tested on InDesign v16.0; Mac 11.0.1.

Yes, Barb, we agree. I wonder if a tiny mouse jitter was moving the frame some unnoticed amount and just happened to occur on more than one of us? I will try it on another machine to see.

Hi Mike, you could test whether it is a mousemove by selecting a page in the Pages panel and choosing Override All Master Page Items from the flyout menu rather than Command-Shift clicking

Hi Mike,

are you perhaps working with a facing-pages document and you added or removed a single page so that the document page with the placed image became an odd page where it was an even page before ( or it became an even page where it was an odd page before)? That would override one aspect of the frame, its position. It would not override other aspects like fill color or size.

Hi Mike,

found yet another case where the graphic frame's position is overridden:

Place an image and as a next step change the frame fitting options to Content Sensitive.

Wow, Uwe. Nice catch. How did you figure that out? Is that what you were teaching, Mike?

The other frame fitting commands don't seem to do it—just Content Aware Fit. Not even Fit Frame to Content—which changes the frame size—breaks the link.

Hi Barb,

the "usual suspects" are features that are added more or less recently.

And thank you, that you tested this as well. Frame fitting option "Content Sensitive" is not only overriding position, but also size. Fill color or stroke weight/stroke color are not overridden.
