Export to pdf with Comments (Notes)

Community Beginner ,
Dec 18, 2019 Dec 18, 2019

Hi,

When I load notes from pdf to Indesign, I process some (delete) and need to send some back in pdf. Is there a possibility to export to pdf including notes?

Thank you for the advice.

Radek

Are you using InDesign 2020?

Thank you for answer.
Importing notes is easy to understand. I need to create a pdf (exported from Indesign) with notes. There will be the notes I previously imported from pdf.

Thank you

Hey there, You can't export a PDF with comments in InDesign. It is possible to create comments in PDF document but if you want to insert some comments are special instruction, create a slug area in InDesign and paste there and don't forget to include slug while creating pdf.

Thank you for answer.
What is "slug area"? I don't use English Indesign.

Thanks

The blue line beyond the trim size is slug area.

OK thank you.
I need to create pdf (export from Indesign) with correct notes as in pdf (with reply to a note etc.)
Perhaps this is not possible in Indesign, as you write.

Hi,

There is PDFStickies, an InDesign plugin.

Document Geek talks about it here.

( I wrote PDFStickies )

Hi Radek,

don't know if this will help in your particular case, but I think it's good to know that InCopy, not InDesign, has the feature to export editorial Notes to PDF annotations. Don't confuse that InDesign/InCopy feature with the PDF Comments feature in InDesign. With the PDF Comments feature you import PDF annotations. You cannot export PDF annotations.

The Notes panel is available with InDesign and InCopy.

Put your cursor into text or select some text. Then go to:

Type > Notes > Notes Mode

From the help pages of InDesign:

Add editorial notes in InDesign

https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/adding-editorial-notes-indesign.html

From the help pages of InCopy:

Using editorial notes

https://helpx.adobe.com/incopy/using/using-editorial-notes.html

Printing and exporting notes
When you print an InCopy document, you can print any notes that are included in the document at the same time. You can also export notes from InCopy as PDF annotations. However, notes in tables are not exported as PDF annotations.

Hi Uwe,
  thank you for answer.

I create a magazine and receive proofreading in pdf. With the "Import PDF Notes" feature I get notes to Indesign - perfect! I will resolve some notes, some need to send back to the author (because I don't understand them) in PDF (unprocessed ones). And now it is not possible 😞
OK - maybe in some future release.

Thank you for your help.

Radek

Hi Radek,

depending on your needs you may also look into this 3rd-party plug-in:

Hi Pickory,

astonishing, isn't it?

FWIW: InDesign 2020 is still not able to add a Note object to footnote text. So the workflow with InCopy will not work if you want to do an annotation to a footnote.

Adding a Note object to endnote text will work.

But if you convert an endnote with a Note object to a footnote the Note object will be removed without a warning.

Hi Uwe,

"FWIW: InDesign 2020 is still not able to add a Note object to footnote text. So the workflow with InCopy will not work if you want to do an annotation to a footnote."

It is a broken workfow. Track changes do not wok in footnotes. In either application.
