Footnotes not importing from Word doc

Here's one I've never had happen before: When I placed a Word doc with perfectly normal footnotes into my ID document, none of the footnotes came along for the ride. Footnotes is checked in the Import Options dialog box, so that's not the problem. I've just upgraded to Office 365 from 2007...might it be something to do with that?

Flummoxedly,

Down-saving the Word document as .DOC (instead .DOCX) solved the problem of the footnotes -- much appreciated. However, it then gives me a different problem...

All the text in the Word document is applied via stylesheets, except for some localized formatting (such as putting scientific names or publication titles in italics). I have set-up a map for the stylesheets when importing. When I save the Word file as DOCX, this works fine: right after importing the Word doc, I select all the text in INDD, then apply "Clear paragraph-level overrides only" (using Control+Shift+Click). This ensures all the paragraph styles are properly applied, but it also retains the local italic formatting where that is applied. But as noted earlier, when importing DOCX, I lose any footnotes/endnotes.

If I save the Word file as .DOC instead, the footnotes work fine -- but something strange happens to the styles: every font in the imported text changes to either Calibri or Cambria (which don't appear in any of the stylesheets in either Word or INDD). Again, I can fix -- but only applying Control+click to clear character-level overrides. But of course, when I do that, I lose all the local italic formatting!

So it appears I am between a rock and hard place: I can have my footnotes, or I can have my local formatting, but I can't have both! Grrr....
