Hi guys,
I'm having this problem with Indesign:
I need to sort a German index but the options for sorting indexes under the Basic Latin list don't contain German (Swedish, Czech o Latvian are included indeed...). German alphabet has this 3 letters that need to be sorted at the end of the Index: Ä, Ö and Ü. How can I do to sort this German index? Thanks for your help
Hi Julio,
as reference for German ( in Germany ) see what the Duden says:

Maybe this may help:
http://www.brain4.de/programmierecke/js/arraySort.php
Also localeCompare for JavaScript is an important keyword.
Thanks Stefan

Thanks Stefan but this seems a script (as for example ParagraphSort), bus is not the solution to have a sorted automatic index in German. Adobe should add in the Basic Latin options menu the German as independent language. Cheers

Are you sure that umlauted letters sort separately in German? I thought those accents were ignored so that a+umlaut is considered equivalent to a.

Well, that page simply lists the German letters, it doesn't say that that's how they are sorted.
You can also take a look at Marc Autret's SmartSort script which shows how (among very many languages) German is sorted. For German there are even two options, plain and (as mentioned in the Duden link that Uwe provided), German phonebook.

Very interesting script but this doesn't solve the problem with automatic Indexes: you should update an Index and the order of terms should be done by Indesign, not by a script afterwords...

I gave you the link only so you can check the correct sort order of a language. I wasn't suggesting that you should use it to sort your index 🙂
