Hi everyone! I'm writing a document with a lot of images and for each of them I wrote a caption, so I was wondering if there was a way to connect this caption to the image in order to write automatically at what page the image is on.
As you can see in this image, I should replace the "--" with the number of the page the image is on.
Thanks in advance,
Sofia
Hi Sofia,
Bill's idea is a good one!
We can even go one step further if we have to.
In your screenshot the image you refer to is crossing the spine of your facing pages spread. So you could decide to insert the page number of the page left from the spine or the page number right to the spine. Either decision could be the right one.
To make that decision very flexible, just by moving a text frame from the left page to the right page, add the special character, the text variable for Next Page

Create a text frame containing the caption copy but where you would type the page number (making sure that your cursor is inserted and blinking) instead go through the Type Menu>Insert Special Character>Current Page Number. Whatever page you place the caption frame on will automatically display the correct page number.

Thank you so much for your reply. I tried your method but when I select Special Character> Previous Page Number or Following Page Number, the current page number appears anyway. How can I fix it?

Hi Sofia,

In your screenshot the image you refer to is crossing the spine of your facing pages spread. So you could decide to insert the page number of the page left from the spine or the page number right to the spine. Either decision could be the right one.
To make that decision very flexible, just by moving a text frame from the left page to the right page, add the special character, the text variable for Next Page Number to the text instead of Current Page Number.
If the text frame that is showing the page number is on its own, this would not change anything and gives you the page number of the page left from the spine. But if you would add a new text frame, thread it to the text frame of your figure number and move that text frame to the page right to the spine, Next Page Number will show the number of the page right to the spine.
From my German InDesign 2021 where I exactly did this:
Next Page Number is always showing the page number of the page where the next text frame of a threaded story is positioned. In my first screenshot I decided that the image is on page 118. In my second screenshot I decided that 121 is the right page number. All with the same text variable, Next Page Number. Should I change my mind in the second example I only have to move that empty text frame to page 120 like that:
