I cannot open an idml file in (16.0)

A freelancer has produced a document for me and this is saved as an IDML file. I cannot open this in InDesign (I have the latest update). 

I get the following error message 'The file is in an unknown format and cannot be opened.'

How do I open the file?

Does this idml file open fine of ID 15? Did you rule out the corruption of the file?

Why did they give you an IDML file? No need for that....get the INDD file.
