Good morning:
I have the following problem: I´ve updated recently In DESIGN 2021. My collegue use ID 2020 and should use it because her MACOS. We excahange graphic files working together, even if I send her only the ID file without the linked images, she could work on the graphics because she would VIEW the images (even if in low resolution) and then I would finalize the work by resuming the file, which automatically linked the images. NOW it is not possible anymore, with a previous version my colleague DOESN'T view the unlinked images anymore. This prevents the work. This is a serious problem. Do you think there is a way to solve it? I´m talking about files with layouts with many photos and therefore impossible to pass them up and down (nor with iCloud as the connection is not optimal).
I thank yu in advance Giuliana
Hi Giuliana,
if you exchange IDML files with your colleague and do not provide the linked images InDesign cannot calculate and render the preview for the placed images. It would make sense that you are using the same version of InDesign with your colleague for this project, and that version is InDesign 2020 version 15.
What's your operating system?
Are you able to run InDesign 2020 on your machine?
Check system requirements for InDesign 2020 version 15.0:

...And also look into this one:

Thank you for your kind answer: unfortunaly I have worked already with ID 21 e so I have so many file in 2021...I prefer not reverse to ID 20.
Further problem is that my graphic files linked with 1000 images in extaernal HD so this causes a problem also...
I just wander that not a so common e issue so that adobe founded a better solution, a part f cloud that is diffciolt in my case , because I manage layout with hundred images linked and I have a worse wifi connction. Thank you anyway 😞

You don't seem to have tried the solution that's been offered.

If you need to work with someone who is not able to update to InDesign 2021 there is no other solution. Best practice is always to work on the very same version platform. Even if you work on documents with a lot of linked images. Once you exported an IDML file from InDesign 2021 and opened it on your machine with InDesign 2020 the links will be still intact and InDesign is able to render the previews for the placed images.
You could even batch process the conversion process with the help of a script by Peter Kahrel:
https://creativepro.com/files/kahrel/indesign/batch_convert.html
You and your colleague you may also consider to work with InDesign 2019 if that is still possible.
Why? Because in InDesign 2020 the engineers attempted to fix a long-standing bug with text wrap and indented text and had to go back to the InDesign 2019 behavior with InDesign 2021. Details:
Option to have list indents work near text-wrap objects
