InDesign 15.1.1 crashing / very slow with Mac OS Catalina - placing pdfs

Automatic update of Catalina last night and now having issues with Indesign - unusably slow to place and resize files - seems to be one pdf in particular. Keeps crashing. I changed the pdf to a tiff as a workaround, but it would be good to know what the problem is. Nothing wrong with the original pdf. 

 

Using a pretty much brand new iMac

(Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2019) 

3 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i5

16 GB 2667 MHz DDR4

 

Need help, please.
