InDesign 2021 problems – must force quit

I see many problems listed in the forum regarding InDesign 2021. My own is relatively minor, so far. It simply refuses to quit. My question for Adobe, or for the forum, is whether Adobe is working on a new version to address these bugs? Or, would one of you kindly have a possible solution for me? I work on a mid-2012 MacBook Pro, with the Catalina OS. All other Adobe software seems in good order. Thanks so much.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about your experience. Does it happen while working on a specific document?

Have you tried resetting preferences? If not, please try doing that by following instructions below:

  • Close all adobe applications
  • Go to Locations:
  • ~/Library/Caches
  • ~/Library/Preferences
  • Rename Adobe InDesign and com.adobe.indesign to Adobe InDesign.old and com.adobe.indesign.old
  • Launch InDesign from the CC

***Please note that resetting preferences will remove all the custom settings and InDesign will launch with default settings. This way all your old settings will be saved in .old folders and InDesign will recreate new folders with default settings.

Let us know how it goes. Looking forward to your response.

Regards,

Ashutosh

Thank you Ashutosh,

My InDesign work is most basic and not very complicated at all.

No specific document.
My habit is to close a document. Then I minimize InDesign so that it is not
on the screen. Later, if no other work is to be done, I bring it back up
and either go to Quit InDesign from the File menu, or do a Command Quit. In
most instances, this causes the freeze with the ever-revolving color wheel.
I am thinking that the action of minimizing the software might be a problem
and that if I close a document and quit InDesign right then and there,
perhaps there will be no problem. It is worth a few tries to eliminate that
variable.

Regardless, I'll give the preference re-set a try. Please forgive my lack
of even the most basic technical knowledge, but I believe when you suggest
I re-launch from the CC, you refer to the Command Center?

Not sure how that is done. I would normally just return to the Applications
menu and click on the InDesign logo to re-launch.

Thanks for sharing the information, Jim. CC is meant for Creative Cloud here. You can open the app as usual as well. Let us know if resetting preferences helps you out. Thanks!

I am afraid it did not help. But, I will keep trying.
