If your AI file IS sved as a PDF and you want to open it in Illusatrator, you'll have to use Open With > Illustrator.

That's a file association issue. You'll need to associate AI files with Illustrator or use the Edit With command.

yes, it still opens the image in PREVIEW and makes my artwork a PDF. Id like InDesign to open up whatever the native program is instead of a PREVIEW image

Right, so as Bob alluded, it's not an InDesign issue; you'll have to repair the file association at the OS level.

First, a question: Is your AI file saved as a PDF? If not, do the following:

As others have mentioned, you need to tell your Mac OS to open AI files in Illustrator.

To do this, select any AI file and press Command + i. (Get info)

In the "Opem With" section, choose Adobe Illustrator

Then press the Change All button.
