Indesign Packaging fonts problem

When I package my document on InDesign, the fonts and links are included in the package. When I send them over to someone to view, the fonts come up as 'missing' on their document. They are linked in the package so why can't someone that doesn't have the fonts downloaded not see them? They can see the linked photos even tho they don't have those downloaded, shouldn't this be the same for fonts? Help. How do I fix this so anyone can open the packaged indd. file and get all aspects of the document?

Hi. Fonts aren't linked in the package. They're included with the package, so the receiver can install them. InDesign only uses fonts that are installed on the individual computer, either installed like all other fonts, or downloaded from the type.adobe.com cloud.

Please note that when you do creat a package, there's a warning notice about copyright on fonts. Please ensure that whoever installs these fonts to view your work, knows to uninstall those fonts, upon completion.

If you want people to simply see what you've created, you may also just create a PDF and be sure to embed all fonts.

This is absolutely not true. InDesign can use fonts located in the Fonts folder but only for the indd document relative to the package.

Check if the recipient did not rename or move the document fonts folder.

They do not rename the document or move it anywhere, and it is still saying Fonts Not Found. What should we try next?

What kind of fonts is it? Do you work on different platforms (Mac and Windows?) If yes, fonts have to be OTF (OpenType) to be used on Mac and Windows.

Can you show a screen shot of the content of the document fonts folder?

These are Mac system fonts. They cannot be used on Windows.

That is absolutely false. The fonts that are packaged are packaged to a document fonts folder and if the InDesig file is opened from there, the fonts should be found by InDesign for use on that one document.

You should not have to install the fonts to use them in that particular document. When it is opened, it should be able to access any fonts that are in its Document Fonts folder.  

I have noticed that it does not always work with Type 1 Postscript fonts. Support for those is going away anyway, so that will be less and less of a problem in the future.

You have to zip the entire Package - you can't just send the InDesign file.

Images are different - as InDesign creates a Proxy image to be placed into the file for layout purposes, it doesn't display the actual linked image - only an approximation of how it will look in the layout. 

Fonts will be in the packaged fonts folder. And the user can unzip the package, open the file and work on it using the fonts from the document. 

It would  be quite a copyright issue if they installed the fonts directly.

Remember - fonts are software, they are licensed not owned - whoever is working on the document using the fonts needs to have a license. 

Typically the EULA of the fonts will dictate how many seats are allowed for the font. 

But they should be able to work on the document and send it back without the need to actually install the fonts.

In my cas the font collection file created by InDesign was reported invalid on a Windows 10 PC.

I managed to find an online converter which stripped out each font from withing the collection - thes efonts ar enow valid fonts

BTW, it's not correct that Windows InDesign can only use OpenType fonts - my fonts are both opentype & TrueType
