InDesign shrinking and expanding

InDesign 2021, up to date. New 8.5 x 11 doc, .75 margins. My text box, which I had already placed on a master page, comes in way too small on the first page, 1st screenshot. When I click on it I get the 2nd screenshot - pasteboard shrinks.text box gets huge.

I'm using a MacBookAir with an external monitor, and that's where the problem is, I find. If I work on the laptop's screen it's OK. But I've been using this computer with this monitor since last year with no problem. Just wondering.

Just updated to Big Sur 11.4, no joy.
