Hello,

I am trying to get answers as to why the latest update to Indesign has meant that I can no longer export to PDF (any size artwork). I have never had this problem before, but it started yesterday.

I have checked numerous forums and still not found out why this issue is occurring.

I have tried the below, but still not luck. I have even taken to re-downloading older versions, but still having the same issue.

Even when I am trying to close the cancelled export, I am unable to close Indesign software. I have to force quit.

I'm desperate for a resolution. Any guidance help would be greatly appreciated.

Solutions

Solution 1: Install the latest InDesign updates.

Install the Iatest InDesign updates by choosing Help > Updates, or by visiting the Adobe product updates page: http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates

Solution 2: Disable preflight and restart InDesign.

  • Choose Window > Output > Preflight.

  • Deselect the On checkbox.

  • Quit InDesign and restart it.

  • Export your document to PDF.

Solution 3: Add the document to a new book and export from the book panel

  • Choose File > New > Book.
  • From the Book panel, click Add Documents.
  • Select the INDD document that is affected and click Open.
  • From the Book Panel pop-up menu, choose Export Book to PDF.

Solution 4: Disable background exporting

  • Create an empty text file and save it as "DisableAsyncExports.txt".
  • Navigate to the location of the InDesign executable, for example:

    Win: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS5\

    Mac: /Applications/Adobe InDesign CS5.5/Adobe InDesign CS5.5.app/Contents/MacOS/
  • Move the text file from step 1 into this location.

Which (exact) version of InDesign and OS?

You are using the Adobe PDF Presets to produce your PDF?

Make sure you have updated to the latest version of CC2019 (14.01).

Reset your InDesign preferences, if that doesn't work let us know:

Close InDesign. Then hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift (Windows) or Cmd + Ctrl + Opt + Shift (Mac), and relaunch InDesign. Respond in the affirmative to the dialog asking if you really want to replace the preferences.

It might be best to uninstall InDesign CC2019, using the drop-down menu in the Creative Cloud app (see screen shot) if, after reinstalling you still have the issue, uninstall InDesign again and run Adobe Cleaner before reinstalling.

Use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems

Ok,

I have carried out the first suggestion to this. It unfortunately still has not worked.

If I run the Adobe Cleaner, will that wipe off all creative cloud applications?

We've had the same problem, even with the 14.0.1 update installed. Have reported the bug to Adobe.

In the meantime, we've been able to successfully export PDFs with other presets, such as one of the other PDF/X standards or Press Quality and manually adjust the settings to your print shop's requirements.

Note: just to be cautious, save your InDesign layout as an IDML in case anything gets corrupted when you crash/force quit.

Hi AlexUnder_Boots,

just tested "Disable Background Exporting" with "DisableAsyncExports.txt" in my InDesign 2020 version 15.1.1.103 application folder. All is working as expected. I'm on Windows 10. Note: You have to quit and restart InDesign so InDesign can pick up the message.

What is your operating system?

Regards,
Uwe Laubender
