indesign won't update page numbers. I have been using inDesign CS6 for years. Updated a book to CC2020 and page numbering no longer works. I've set it up as I always have. One odd thing that happens is that chapters seem to spontaneously reset to "start section." which means the page numbers won't flow continuously. I unselect this but it still won't update numbers.

Let me start by clarifying: the numbers within the file are incrementing, but not across the book?

In the Book window panel menu have you set the Book Page Numbering Options? Have you selected Update Numbering from the same panel menu?
