Is it possible to see a list of how many different characters used in a document?

What I'm asking is, I'd like to see the list of characters used with names and unicodes. I'm dealing with a document that has way too many similar characters (eg. both "u with diaeresis" and "u with double acute") and would like to ask the author if that is intentional.
