Is there a way to access a previous version of a document?

I've made such a mess of a huge document, I'd like to return to a previous version of it. Is that possible?

If you haven't Saved it you can close the document and not save it, so it will return to its previously saved state. 
It's important to keep regular backed up copies of documents so you can recover them if necessary.
