Keep paragraph breaks from Word when applying paragraph style

Hello,

I'm really stuck with a paragraph style problem! I'm using paragraph styles to format a book. Unfortunately, once I place text from Word and apply the paragraph style, all the paragraph breaks from Word disappear. I've experimented with different import options, but it doesn't seem to make a difference - once I apply the paragraph style, breaks disappear and I'm left the world's longest paragraph.

Am I missing something in the set up of my paragraph style?

Any help would be so appreciated.

As already requested by @SJRiegel, let's begin wit

Can you share some screen shots (with hidden characters showing) a section of your Word file, and the same bit of text after the problem occurs in InDesign?
