I have a lengthy 145,000 word non-fiction Word Document with many Endnotes. On trying to load the manuscrpit into InDesign the Endnotes they reset to continuous numbers instead of the numbers starting fresh for each chapter. With over 1000 references I need the Endnote numbers to remain as they are in the Word document. Any suggestions?

Hi John,

you may already solved your issue with endnotes numbering.

My late answer here should apply for the casual reader or someone with a similar problem.

To make live endnotes start numbering with a new chapter, the text of every new chapters must be in its own story. To break a long story of threaded text frames with all of your chapters in several stories ( each chapter should go into one single story ) you can use a script by Arial Walden to break the long story:

Break Text Thread: A Free InDesign Script

InDesign makes it surprisingly difficult to break the link between two text frames without otherwise modifying the layout. …

If you have InDesign 2020 or 2021 installed the script is already installed with InDesign.

Check your Scripts panel. Go to folder Community > BreakTextThread.jsx

Important: Before doing anything with the script read all the details about handling the script in the linked blog post.

Before you execute it on this long story with your endnotes, go to Type > Endnotes Options… and set the scope for endnote positioning from Document ( that's the default ) to Story.

Test all this with a duplicate of your document.

Something to add:

Supposed you successfully broke your one big single story into smaller ones, each is a chapter, the endnotes are gathered in their own endnotes stories just after each chapter. You now may want bring all the endnotes to the end of your document:

Move the text frames of your endnote stories to the end of your document.

Do not copy/paste them; just move them. You can do this if you zoom out of your document and move the text frames accross the spreads. Do not thread the endnotes text frames together. That will break the workflow and the endnote texts.
